Trimestrial Photo Contest
(Updated
December 8, 2005)
This
activity comprises two programs in one: the Trimestrial Photo Contest
and the membership voting section of the IHS SOTY/HOTY program, the latter
of which is comprised of the seedling category - one of the six categories
listed below. In addition to these rules governing principally the TPC,
please also refer to the IHS SOTY/HOTY program rules.
To
encourage interaction and active participation, the IHS has developed
this program to provide everyone a new means of enjoying our hibiscus. The
details of this program are as follows:
1.
New TPC "Trimestrial Photo Competition": The
new TPC will be run over 3 competitions each year, the first of which
will be 2004-1. There are 6 sections for which the members and affiliate
members may vote. In the voting form provided at the end of each section,
members are asked to vote for the top 3 in each category except the seedling
category, where they will be asked to vote for the best 6 (assuming there
are more than 6 candidates) or for the best (if there are less than 6
candidates). The winners of the 6 sections will go into the finals where
the annual Grand Champion and a 1st and 2nd runner up will be selected
by members and affiliates. The annual Grand Champion winner will be awarded
a genuine Tahitian Black Pearl, kindly donated by Richard Johnson, and
worth hundreds of dollars on the open market.
2.Categories:
1)
Singles section [one bloom]
2) Doubles Section [one bloom]
3) Miniatures Section - single or double [one bloom]
4) Seedling Section - all categories, i.e. singles, doubles, minatures,
etc. [one photo of three different blooms of the same candidate]
5) Multi Bloom Section [two or more blooms on a bush]
6) Computer Art Section.
3.The
winners of each of the 3 TPC's and the annual Grand Champion selections,
will become a permanent record of this web site. They will be posted under
the section "Member Activities" and will generally be uploaded
within approximately two week of the final voting.
4.
The TPC's will be scheduled as follows -
the number advancing in accordance with the year, i.e., TPC 2004-1 and
the year following TPC: 2005-1, etc. (unless otherwise mentioned, the
exact time will be midnight GMT of the date indicated)
TPC
2006-1; will start 1st October 2005, entry deadline 31st December, first
two weeks of January 2006 for final web site setup, and second two weeks
of January for voting.
TPC
2006-2; Starts 1st February 2006, entry deadline 30th April 2006, first
two weeks of May for final web site setup, and final two weeks of May
for voting.
TPC
2006-3: Starts on the 1st June 2006, and entry deadline is 31st August
2006, first two weeks of September for final web site setup, second two
weeks of September for voting.
TPC
2006 Grand Champion selection will be set up the first two weeks of October,
second two weeks of October for voting.
TPC 2007-1; Starts on the 1st October 2006, entry deadline is 31st December,
first two weeks of January 2007 for final web site setup, second two weeks
of January for voting.
Etc,
Etc.
5.
Eligibility: To be eligible one must be a valid IHS member or
an affiliate
as of the entry deadline, which is synonymous with being a member of the
IHS mail list.
6.
Entries are limited to five in each category per member
or affiliate;
however, members and
affiliates may
exchange early entries with a different entry any time up to the deadline.
7.
Entries may be submitted in any size, but they will be presented for competition
by using Paint Shop Pro to resize the largest dimension to 200 pixels
and they will be compressed to result in an image size of approximately
20K or less. Because of the nature of the medium, i.e., digital rendering
via the internet, and because alterations are often difficult or impossible
to detect, we have little choice but to accept any image regardless of
the manipulations undertaken to render it in its final form. Members will
judge it simply on its appearance, and we, of necessity, will have to
ignore the elements, which resulted in the actual image submitted.
Photos should be of flowers on backgrounds of predominantly natural hibiscus
foliage, realizing there may be other extraneous things in view, such
at pots, mulch, sky, ocean, etc.
SOTY
candidates are to be identified by name and parentage or just the latter
if it has not yet been named. HOTY candidates are to be identified by
hybridizer, name of the seedling and parentage.
8.
As per the web master or TPC directors discretion (whom ever does the
layout), entries may be set up generally no later than two weeks following
the entry deadline.
9. All entries are to be submitted to jpu11707@bigpond.net.au
with the understanding that the IHS may use these photos at their discretion
in perpetuity without compensation. Moreover it is understood that the
person providing said image (s) is the owner of same or authorized to
provide this authorization to the IHS. The IHS will, where possible, provide
photo credit as follows: IHS - name of author.
10. A committee may
be appointed to oversee this program. This committee will be empowered
to modify this program. Any changes that have been made may be rescinded
by a majority of members who choose to vote. This committee will referee
any related points of contention concerning the selection of winners.
Failing the formation of such a committee, this roll will be reserved
for the IHS Board Of Directors.
