In 2009, the IHS was able to once again begin an auction of hybrid hibiscus seeds. However, it was decided to run the auction on EBay rather than an internal auction on the website. By using EBay, we were able to reach a much wider audience and at the same time use the auction as a form of advertisement for the IHS itself.
The seeds for the auction are kindly donated by members of the IHS and are normally sold in lots of five (5) seeds each. Often the seeds donated for auction are from well known hybridizers within the IHS but donations are welcome from any member who has extra seeds that they wish to contribute. What makes our auction unique is that any one auction can feature seeds from around the world, including the USA, Australia, the South Pacific, Europe and South America. Anyone wishing to donate seeds (in lots of 5 seeds each) are asked to send their contributions to the address at the bottom of the page.
In order to keep shipping costs to a minimum for winning bidders, seeds are sent out from a central location; thus winning bids for seeds from different geographic locations are shipped for one low fee rather than many postal charges if they were shipped by the individual donors from their respective countries.
Unlike other hibiscus groups in other parts of the world who charge a yearly membership fee, IHS membership is entirely free. The proceeds from the IHS auction are our principal source of income and are used to finance many ongoing projects of the IHS including fees for this website, the HOTY cash award, and Seed Bank expenses among others.
Below is a calendar showing the next quarterly IHS EBay auction where we will be featuring seeds from hybridizers from around the world. Check back on a regular basis to keep abreast of new additions to the auction.
