The IHS Nomenclature Programs: consists of the IHS/Dimino data base, known as The Global Hibiscus Library, and the IHS/Dimino Automated Registration Program which are fully integrated. The International Hibiscus Registry maintained by the Australian Hibiscus Society (AuHS), as the duly authorized International Cultivar Registration Authority (ICRA) still remains the final word on latest registrations combining all those received from around the world, although TGHL is updated periodically to reflect those changes. As per the authorization of April, 2006 by The AuHS Executive Committee, the IHS has been permitted to receive registrations via the IHS/Dimino Automated Registration form. Such provisional reservations are confirmed by the ICRA at which time they are officially recognized under the terms established by the International Society Of Horticultural Science (ISHS) and become part of the International Hibiscus Registry. The
Global Hibiscus Library & Automated Registration Form: The
IHS is greatly indebted to Mr. Joseph Dimino as creator of The Global
Hibiscus Library (TGHL) and the integrated Automated Registration (AR)
form, both major works which have employed great talent and untold hours
of freely contributed time to develop. The IHS considers these programs
a milestone development in cyberspace for the hibiscus world, for TGHL
provides unique features and data recovery options heretofore not possible
or only obtainable with great difficulty, and the AR form provides maximum
data with minimal efforts and auto updates that information to TGHL.
The combination of these programs has resulted in one of the most comprehensive
data input and retrieval systems available to the hibiscus community.
Together, these programs constitute a legacy for which we will be eternally
grateful. The IHS also wishes to expresses its appreciation and acknowledgment to the American Hibiscus Society for authorizing the use of photos in their CD "The American Hibiscus Society Collectors Edition; 50 Years of Hibiscus" and for use of AmHS nomenclature data in compiling the information contained in the Global Hibiscus Library searchable format. Moreover, gratitude is extend to the many individuals that have indirectly and directly graciously given their consent for use of a number their photos used in the IHS Archive and this library, including principal contributions from (listed alphabetically): Allan Little|Bob Rivers-Smith|Carlos Quirino Jr.|Chris Noble|Francoise Levavasseur|Jean Françoise Girard|Jim Purdie|Mervyn Weis|Stanley Palmer|Richard Johnson|Richard Mansbridge|Robert Cook|Roz & Pat Merritt|Wally Morgan. Disclosure:
The compilation of basic information in this section
of IHS website is, in part, derived from earlier compilations. Those
compilations, in most cases, were built upon previous material from
various other sources over the years. Accordingly, the IHS cannot vouch
for its accuracy but presumes it to be correct based on the efforts
of the many who have contributed to the development of hibiscus nomenclature. OTHER RELATED INFORMATION Cultivar registration requires international cooperation especially for plant groups like hibiscus which involves hundreds of hybridizers and breeding centers located in different countries around the world. According to the ISHS, any mechanism, the Global Hibiscus Library for one, that can gather information and pass it on to a central collecting point (ICRA) for re-dissemination is an activity they support. Additionally the IHS Global Hibiscus Library endeavors to aid the ISHS and the AuHS as the ICRA in the hibiscus realm by assisting to place in the public domain information on hibiscus nomenclature as per the below section of the ISHS website under Guidance Notes For ICRA's (last paragraph): Authoritative Status "It should be remembered that it is not possible for a non-statutory registration authority (such as an ICRA) to enforce registration and that the process in itself offers no statutory protection over the plant or its name. Nonetheless, a listing of names in a Checklist or International Register places valuable information into the public domain and so provides invaluable information to a statutory authority as to whether or not a name is already in use." Copyright Wherever copyright Joseph Dimino/Adam Brill appears, please note that this refers only to the script used to generate that section and not the data contained which is considered to be public domain.
